ABOUT NANCY

PLACE STANISLAS
PLACE STANISLAS
Place Stanislas, 54000 NANCY

Place Stanislas is considered as one of the loveliest royal squares in Europe. It is an architectural jewel in Nancy’s crown, a perfect example of 18th century French classicism; it was listed by UNESCO on the World Heritage Sites in 1983. Built by Emmanuel Héré, it is surrounded by gilded wrought iron gates by the master iron craftsman Jean Lamour and the splendid fountains were sculpted by Barthélémy Guibal. The Town Hall, the Opéra-Théâtre and the Beaux-Arts Museum are also situated in this magnificent square.

PARC HÉRÉ
PARC HÉRÉ
Rue Héré, 54000 NANCY

A copy of Septimus Severus triumphal arc in Rome, the decoration glorifies King Louis XV consisting of bas-reliefs and inscriptions, and of an acroterium supporting a group in honour of Louis as victor and peacemaker, and a medaillon of the king. Its name reminds of the architect of Stanislas, Emmanuel Héré.

HÔTEL DE VILLE DE NANCY
HÔTEL DE VILLE DE NANCY
Place Stanislas, 54000 NANCY

The Town Hall has had its home in Place Stanislas since the 18th century. Its grand façade displaying the coat of arms of Stanislas and the emblem of the city of Nancy runs along a whole side of the former royal square. A stone balustrade runs around the top of the building, featuring alternating sculptures of groups of children and fire pots, and trophies of arms in the corners. The entrance doors open into a peristyle, or columned foyer, leading to the main staircase. The wrought iron bannister, made in a single piece, is a genuine masterpiece by Jean Lamour. The stairway, whose walls are decorated with frescoes by the painter Girardet, leads to the Salon Carré, an Italian-style salon which precedes the Grand Salon.

A modest chaple and sanctuary lay until 1738 on the site of the graves of the Burgundians who died at the Battle of Nancy (1477). Over time, it had been remodelled and expanded many times until finally it was razed by Stanislas. Emmanuel Héré was commissioned by Stanislas to build a baroque church in which he lies at rest along with his wife, close to the heart of his daughter Maria Leszczynska, wife of king Louis XV.
